So you are still a playbook owner? Still patiently waiting for something good to happen? I have some news, nothing great, but just a beta OS from RIM for Playbook. I am in the midst of installing it myself, so im unsure what are the new features, but forum feedbacks its seemed RIM has increased the stability of android side loading (well at least we know RIM will not block us from side loading). In a nut shell here are the enhancement in OS 2.1

  • Each Android app will now run in its own window. This greatly improves the user experience and consistency among the other application runtimes.
  • Access to the Camera hardware is now supported for Android apps, allowing many more application types to work on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet.
  • In-App Payment is now supported through the BlackBerry Payment SDK, so Android applications can include virtual items for sale in their applications.
  • Full device encryption is now supported, so that the whole device and personal partition can be secure.
  • Portrait support for Email, Calendar and Contacts
  • Improved folder support including IMAP folder support

This version of software contains support for developers to test their applications against the following runtimes:

  • Runtime for Android apps
  • Adobe AIR 2.x
  • WebWorks
  • Native API 2.x

If you are looking for new simulator, here you go.

After you submit the form, registration may take between a few minutes to an hour to complete. My Playbook is Awesome

The Playbook may lack of apps, but im a happier kid aver since i am able to sideload android apps. I am more fond of it now. And at times i use it to remote in to my laptop at work or Workstation at home, even my trial and test laptop (runs on win 8 beta consumer preview). Don't be fooled by the below images, only the flipboard runs directly from the Playbook other than that all the other OS are actually remote desktop.

I alsi find the citrix desktop very useful, but its only a trial account with limited functionality and it runs on Windows XP. Hot me up if you want to know more on how to run these OS’es on you QNX Device .
